Instrumentally flawless and vocally inventive.
Singer-songwriter and educator, Nelda, is based in London and is currently preparing to release her new concept album in July 2024. The album is written about voluntary displacement and has been created through interviewing and collaborating with foreign artists currently based in London, and writing songs based on their experiences. "Home is Where I Go" will be released on May 31st and is co-written by Australian songwriter Etoile Marley. It questions belonging but reveals that we create home where we go.
"Everything Is Scary" is the lead single from the upcoming album, and was created in collaboration with Italian artist Viola Ugolini. The song talks about the difficulties faced when moving to a new country, including learning things anew and a lack of familiarity with people and places.
The song begins with piano chords typical of classic jazz, the bass and drums remain in the background holding a tight groove. Nelda's melismatic vocals and carefully curated harmonies drive home the song's message. A saxophone joins the sonic landscape towards the end of the track, performing a unique solo before fading back out to allow Nelda to repeat the chorus and bring the song to its end. This track has a strong message that provokes thought in the listener, and is also a relaxing and melodic piece of music. An incredible piece of songwriting.
