On March 3rd, the music world welcomed "Flamenco de Cuartito, Vol. 1 – Cantaoras," the first volume of an exciting new series that blends traditional flamenco with the unrefined charm of Lo-Fi music.

Listeners are invited into a mesmerising atmosphere that refreshes flamenco. The music's DIY roots shine through, having been recorded at El Cuartito, Vicente’s rooftop studio in Seville. This initiative represents a fresh perspective in independent music, showcasing how artists can create outside of conventional studio settings.
Collaboration is key in "Flamenco de Cuartito." The EP features four remarkable cantaoras: Sara Holgado, Inma la Carbonera, Cristina Tovar, and Laura Madero. Their strong traditional flamenco vocals blend beautifully with modern electronic elements and inventive guitar work. This varied sound appeals to both purists and those who appreciate contemporary music.
Each cantaora showcases a unique style, enhanced by contributions from members of the Music Laboratory of Solidarios para el Desarrollo, an NGO helping people experiencing homelessness. This partnership brings a meaningful depth to the EP, emphasising music's ability to heal and unite.
The EP consists of four distinct tracks, each with its own narrative:
Segrum incorporates a lively rumba beat. With its mix of raw emotion and smooth rhythm, it creates an engaging opening that sets the stage for the rest of the project.
Roto explores emotional vulnerability without featuring guitar. Instead, it relies on synths and electronic beats to craft a reflective atmosphere, highlighting the complexities of life.
Los rumbos perdíos, an electrifying bulería, features twelve guitars and a drum machine. The deep, mysterious vocals draw listeners into a captivating musical experience.
Junio en el Norte is the closing piece and is an intimate duo of voice and ukulele, creating dialogue between different worlds and showcasing flamenco's adaptability in today’s music scene.
Mixed by Karo Sampela of SISUMUSIC and mastered by Mario G. Alberni at Kadifornia Mastering, the sound quality of "Flamenco de Cuartito, Vol. 1" is exceptional. The mix allows each element to shine, from the subtlety of the guitar to the emotional depth of the cantaoras' voices. The production embraces the Lo-Fi spirit, welcoming its imperfections while delivering a rich listening experience.
"Flamenco de Cuartito, Vol. 1" by José Torres Vicente represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of flamenco. This innovative project not only connects traditional and modern music but also highlights the significance of collaboration in artistic expression. For music enthusiasts, this EP invites exploration of the relationship between genres and showcases the vibrant sounds that emerge when culture meets innovation.
Rich themes and an experimental approach mean that it will resonate with listeners long after its last note fades. It stands as a testament to flamenco's enduring spirit in our fast-changing digital world.
